THE "DEATH STAMP."
A CURIOUS COINCIDENCE. Among the £2,00Q|,000 worth of stamps displayed at the London Exhibition was one of the most tragic of all stamps, the "Death Stamp" of Serbia issued in 1!)04 to commemorate the accession of King Peter I. The assassination of King Alexander and Queen Draga prepared the way for accession, and. in a curious way the new stamp bore the portrait of the murdered monarch. A French engraver prepared" the design from the original executed by a Serbian artist; it showed flie profiles of the founder of the dynasty and of King Peter. When the stamps were released at the time of the latter's coronation it was discovered that the design contained the death mask of King Alexander. When the stamps were inverted the single head could be traced in the reversed features of the two. It was a most skilful and subtle introduction. The engraver denied this, and the mystery has never been so'lved.
