The Northland Age. Kaitaia. reports an important event as follows:—"A new departure, which, whilst very commendable to those taking part in it, is a reflection on the County Council, was made last Wednesday. The road between Kaitaia and Slater's Mill, at Victoria Valley—Takahue Junction has got into a very bad state. As the County Council was either unable or unwilling to undertake the repair work, the citizens took the bull by the horns, and undertook the work themselves." A canvass of the district was made, resulting in £25 5s being raised. Four lorries and seven drays, with drivers, were lent; storekeepers 'lent shovels and gave four tins of benzine. Six men gave free labour; and morning and afternoon tea was provided and dispensed by a lady. The report, continues: —"Holes were cleaned out and filled with metal or shingle in all the worst places. Wednesday did not suffice to do all the work, so it was continued later as far as the money and vehicles available would allow. As far as the result of this labour would permit a big improvement has been made on the road, and .we should have no repetition of the experiences of late, when cars were stuck for hours in some of the holes."
