The following report is to be submitted to to-day’s meeting of the Otorohanga County Council: Te Rau-a-Moa Riding: Tbe continuous wet weather has been a severe tax on tbe roads in this and other ridings. As portion of the NgutunuiKawa Road were cutting up I found it necessary to send by rail 50 cubic yards of shingle for repairs. This metal is now being carted and placed on the road. Wharepapa Riding: Since the last meeting all new metalling work has been suspended until fine weather sets in again. Metal repairs have been carried out on the Te Kawa-Ngaroma and Otorohanga-Kihikihi Roads. Ordinary repairs to various clay roads near Ngaroina have been undertaken. Honikiwi Riding: Minor repairs are finished on the Honikiwi and other roads in the riding, but the continuous wet weather has prevented much of this work being done. However, as soon as the weather will permit, repair worlv, will be carried out as well, and as far, as funds will permit. Mangaorongo Riding: The principal work in this riding lias been the repair of the main Otorohanga-Kihikihi Road, which has recently cut up very •badly. About 220 cubic yards of repair metal have been carted out, but considerably more metal will be required. in fact, from the Mangaorongo Road junction the road needs re-met-alling However, for the time being the work has been knocked off until the weather is more favourable In the Kio Kio drainage district the work of cleaning out the main outfall has been taken in hand, and about sixty chains have been completed satisfactorily. Waipa Riding: The ordinary maintenance and repair work has been done in this riding as far as weather would admit. On the Te Kuiti and Otewa roads metal repairs have been effected. Public Works Estimates: 1 have conferred with the district engineer of the Public Works Department in connection with subsidies, etc, to be provided on the' current year’s estimates. County Adjustments: In company with the Waipa and Waitomo county engineers. I inspected the road machinery which the W r aitomo County Council has offered to take over With the exception of one item, which it was agreed was worth £25 more than was shown, the prices offered generally appear to be fair Heavy Traffic: I attended a conference of local bodies held at Hamilton on two occasions to discuss matters dealing with heavy traffic, and it was finally" decided to send a remit to the Counties’ Association suggesting that the Government amend the Public Works Act so as to allow local bodies to prohibit heavy traffic as defined in the Act at all or any time of the year, on all roads under their jurisdiction.
