“OFFSIDES” CRITICISM.
(To the Editor.) Sir.—“ Offside,” in his criticism of players and officials in your issue of Thursday last, hit below the belt when he accused the Waipa Union of secrecy with regard to the junior selector. Most of the followers of the game know whom the gentleman is, and if “Offside" had taken a little moretrouble he could easily have ascertained also. Whilst appreciating ‘Offside’s” comments in general, any remark that is not quite correct and would only encourage strife, is not in the best interests of the sport. Thanking you in anticipation, I am. etc., FAIRPLAY. Sir. —As a referee of the Waipa Rugby Union I wish to take exception to the article written by “Offside!,” published in your issue of June 23rd. To begin with his leading statement that in every match, without exception, one or more players have been ordered off the field is quite incorrect, as the most casual follower of the different games played must know. Why should “Offside” lake the liberty to criticise the decisions of th« Union's referees when in every branch of sport the referees’ decision (whether right or wrong) is. final and true sports are always ready to abide by decisions given by the referee. If “Offside” would refrain from the unusual practice of criticising He referees and give fuller details of the different matches played T think that it would meet with the aopreval of all Rugby enthusiast;-;, and ne’n to foster the right spirit in Rughy circles. I am, etc., E. N. G ALU AG HER. (“Offside” in his article did n d state players had been ordered off the field in every match, but every Saturday.*—Ed.)
