THE BACON INDUSTRY.

EFFECT OF PRIVATE- ENTERPRISE A strong plea to have the bacon industry established on a national cooperative basis was made by Mr P. J. Small at last Wednesday’s session of the Dairy Farmers’ Union Dominion conference. Mr Small, in the course of a lengthy survey of the position of the industry, mentioned how privateenterprise was creeping in, and the disastrous results that would accrue therefrom to the industry. He deplored the manner in which private enterprise directed the farmer just what was to he paid for iiis produce. There was only one solution to the matter, and that was nationalisation of the industry. On the ‘ draught board.” as be chose to term it, the bacon producers. were given one move, and that move was not to the advantage of the producers, hut as things were at present they had no other alternative. After dealing with various aspects of consigning produce. Mr Small asked members to note his words when ha prophesied in two or three years’ time running side by side with the dairying industry, would lie the bacon industry. Mr Small moved: ‘■'Seeing that the bacon industry is in a very unsatisfactory state, this conference is determined to see the industry established o" a naMonal co-operative basis, and instructs the Dominion executive to make strenuous efforts to work to .that end.” —Carried.
