ITEMS OF INTEREST. (Resident Representative.) There were three tenders put in for the erection of two shops (concrete) in Maniapoto Street for Mr R. Green. The successful tenderers are Messrs : Closey Bros., whose price was only a : few pounds below that of R. Bell. Mr 0. 'W. Cooper was the other tenderer. | Nominations for the various cbopI ping events to be contested at the | Easter Monday sports meeting closed | on Wednesday, and the handicaps will |be published on Tuesday. There are ! 15 nominated for Die Otorohanga Open ! Standing Handicap (loin block), 17 for the Open Standing (12in block), seven for the Local Chop (loin block) and 10 for the Open Underhand Handicap Chop (18in block). The result of the poll for the'elec-tion;,-of a Licensing Committee of five members for Waitomo resulted in the return of Messrs H. T. Morton (979 votes), V. W. Lorigan SBG (Te Kuiti), R. I-r. Piggott, 811 (Menui), H. F. Jenkins, 780 (Waitara), and J. W. W. Seymour, 702 (Otorohanga). The unsuccessful candidates were Messrs P. D. Smythe, CL Bird, L. W. Birdling, J. N. Boddie and W. D. Hathaway.. There were 6533 valid votes recorded/ IS being rejected as informal. The annual meeting of the Otorohanga Rod and Gun Club will be held this evening at 7 p.m., when the election of officers will take place. As Mr J. Parry is leaving the district a new secretary will have to he found and it will be difficult to find a suitable man to take his place. There are several who qould assume the position but they feel shy of taking the mantle discarded bv Mr Parry, who has proved an exceptionally good and efficient secretary. The final of the series of dances in connection with the Otorohanga sports meeting took place on Wednesday evening and was well attended. The waltz competition attracted ten couples, who gave some fine exhibitions of dancing. The prize was awarded to Mr inkpen and Mrs Theo. Taylor, Mr Maugham and Mrs Rastrick securing second honours. The “Spot'' dance competition was won by Mi - Foster and Miss Fisher. The floor was in splendid condition, having been dressed with a specially prepared powder. Mr ('. Taylor proved an efficient M.C.

The annual school picnic for the Otorohanga children is to be held on Wednesday next on Mangapu Island providing the weather is fine. Should it be wet then the Town Hall and adjoining section will be utilised for the occasion. Members .of the School Committee, teachers, and Mesdames Cliampney, Rhodes and Davies are a managing committee, with Mr W. Hall as secretary, and no doubt provision will be made for a most pleasurable outing for the pupils and their parents. All parents and guardians are cordially invited, and the children are expected to bring cups and provisions, the committee undertaking to provide sandwiches, tea, etc. An attractive sports programme ha? been prepared. Mr Hall has donated £2 2s towards the prize fund, • which will, no doubt, be enhanced considerably by the amount collected by the senior children.

The Governor-General’s consent to the raising of the £SOOO loan for road metalling between Otorohanga and Maihiihi is notified in the Gazette.

The tour of Parliamentary repre-i sentatives through the King Country!, is expected to begin on Ist May and finish on sth May, during which time, according to present plans, Waitomo, Otorohanga, Rangitoto, Pio Pio, and Aria are to be visited. It is intended to let the delegation understand the many disabilities the district is suffering from owing to native leases and land tenure, and to point, out to it the suitability of certain parts of the country for immigrants.
