TE AWAMUTU NEEDS.

Sir. —While visiting your town recently I was shown all round the borough by friends, and my first request was to visit the swimming baths. Much to my surprise I was informed the town did not boast such a national requirement. In a town like Te Awamutu, which is unquestionably a fast growing community, and, I am told, with an inexhaustible water supply, swimming baths should be one of the first considerations of the Borough Council, both from a health giving and sports point of view. Most important of all, there are the school children to be considered. In every town throughout the Dominion where there are baths each child is given free instruction and certificates are issued periodically for life saving, distance swimming, etc, and thus- each child is encouraged to do his or ~her best. How many times during their life may be knowledge gained at school be the means of saving not only their own life, but also the lives of many others? As to financing such a scheme, the general policy adopted by small towns throughout the Dominion is to organise a carnival, the Council subsidising the amount raised £ for £. Undoubtedly there is a great opportunity for someone with organising ability to take the matter in hand, and not only carry out a great service to the town but also to the Dominion, and to whom the baths will stand as an everlasting memorial. I am, etc., VISITOR.
