ESTIMATES DUE IN A FORTNIGHT.
"When will the Public Works Estimates reach the House?" asked Mr R. Masters (Stratford) in the House of Representatives. The member mentioned that phenomenally fine weather was being experienced, and the local bodies would like to proceed with works if they knew what provision had been made on the Estimates.
The Hon. J. G. Coates replied that the Estimates would be ready in a few days, but the date of their presentation to the House was a matter for the Prime Minister.
Mr Massey: In about a fortnight
Mr Coates added that the local bodies this year had been very reasonable in their applications. That might be because under the new arrangements they had discussed works with the local engineers of the Department. There had been very little duplication and the work of the Department in the preparation of the estimates had been greatly reduced. He could say that in cases where urgent work required to be done such as the provision of access to farms, he could authorise some expenditure in anticipation of Parliamentary approval. But that was not done as a general rule. /
