WORK OF THE MONTH.

OTOROHANGA COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT TO COUNCIL

At the regular monthly meeting' of the Otorohanga County Council yesterday the Engineer (Mr E. R. Gould)

reported as foMows: — Te Rau-a-Moa Riding.—On the Kaw-hia-Pirongia road necessary repair work has been carried out and the condition of the road has been very much improved for wheel traffic. I propose shortly to put the grader on to the unmetalled portions. I.epairs have also been carried out on Various other roads in the Riding. Mangaorongo Riding.—A small contract has been let to M. Morton for metalling a distance of 11 chains on the Paewhenua road. On the Otoro-hanga-Rangiatea road willows have been planted where a recent erosion has taken place. Further metal repairs are necessary on the Otoro-hanga-Kibikihi road between Otorohanga and the Mangaorongo road junction. This will be done as soon as possible, but at present there is some difficulty owing to obstruction by the natives in going through their land to a portion of the Council's reserve, where we particularly wish to get the metal.

Honikiwi Riding.—Metal repairs have been carried out on the Otoro hanga-Pirongia road and the water tables are now being cleaned out with the graders About 40 cubic yards of metal have been dumped near the Waipa bridge for repairs to the Honikiwi road and metal is also being quarried near the Turitea for the same purpose. I have prepared specifications of a contract for repairing and maintaining for 12 months the whole of the roads in the Honikiwi Riding, but the financial position of the Riding precludes a contract of this description being entered into at present.

"Waipa Riding.—The timber for the bridge over the Mangawhero stream on the Tahaia Soldiers' Settlement road is now coming to hand and I expect to commence the erection of the bridge in the course of a few days. Proposals for continuing the forma tion of this road to the bridge will shortly be submitted to the Public Works Department for approval. Minor repairs to the Puketawai and other roads have been effected since last meeting.

Wharepapa Riding.—Rennie Bros, have completed their metalling contract on the Main South road, which extended for a distance of 137 chains. There is still an unmetalled gap of 158 chains, but at present there are no further funds. A rough side track where desired by the settlers to avoid a bad place has been made on the Ngahape road. I have also started to improve and widen portions of the formation on this road in anticipation of a metalling subsidy. Dr Gribben and others who at the last meeting of the Oouncil asked for assistance in making Adams' road passable for wheel traffic have not yet commenced the work, and there appears no immediate likelihood of their doing so.
