SPORTING.

A FORTUNATE SPORTSMAN. Mr G. D. Greenwood has been verj lucky in his racing transactions. The Canterbury owner has only been engaged in racing the thoroughbred for something like 14 years, and during that period horses carrying his colours have won stakes to the value of no less a sum than £114,795. A remarkable feature of the record is that Mr Greenwood has headed the list in Australia as well as in New Zealand, and taking in the combined winnings of his horses on both sides of the Tasman Sea during last season, he tops the list. Mr Greenwood's record is made up as follows: 1908-09, £2,777; 1909-10, £5,195; 1910-11, £8,145; 1911-12, £3,000; 191213, £1,425; 1913-14, £8,350; 1914-15, £6.595; 1915-16, £5.900; 1916-17, £6,000; 1917-18, £10.000; 1918-19, £15,000; 1919 20. £11,000; 1920-21, £9,000; 1921-22, £20,000. Total £114,000. In estimating the winnings of Mr Greenwood it has to be borne in mind that his team of racers has never been very extensive in point of numbers, and the consistent good luck that«has attended* him) is indeed remarkable. Mr Greenwood's greatest winners have been Biplane and Gloaming, and when it is stated that the two Victorian bred horses only cost him 375 guineas and 230 guineas respectively, and that they have won in stakes £41.521, another sidelight is thrown on the manner in which Dame Fortune has attended the Canterbury sportsman in a quarter that at times beats the greatest experts.
