SCENIC RESORTS.
GOVERNMENT -SUSTAINING DOSS.
Last season only one Government tourist resort (Waitomo* Caves) paid its way, and in the report for the year ended 'Marcji last the Caves, in con*junction with the Rotorua acclimatisation district, are the only exception where expenditure did not exceed revenue. The excess of revenue at, the Caves was.£l9Bo, and at the Rotdrua acclimatisation district £l3O. The total revenue of the Department was £50,8'22, and the expenditure £86,943, an excess of expenditure of £34,121, whereas in the'previous year it was £42,898. Rotorua was again the most expensive resort to run, the loss there being £11,674. The direct revenue received by the Department is regarded as very satisfactory. The number of tourists from overseas totalled 8050, and it is'assumed that these spent at * ieast £IOO each in New Zealand. A large portion of this amount is credited to activities of the advertising propaganda work of the Department, ‘which has been considerably extended of late. The value of tours hooked was well maintained in comparison with the past year, being £68,682. In commenting on the increase made in charges and changes in administration that were effected at many of the resorts, the report says that it is as yet too early to estimate the effect.
