CRIMES ACT AMENDMENT

The alteration of the Crimes Act, so as to better protect young girls, was the subject of a deputation which waited upon the Prime Minister and the Minister for Justice yesterday. TheAleputation asked for the removal of the provision which allowed a man to plead that he had reason for 'believing a girl was over the age of consent. It was 'also considered that the presept six months’ limit within which a charge could he laid so operated as to facilitate the escape of many guilty men.
The Hon. E. P. Lee, in reply, said he thought it would he found that the defence that girls appeared to be over the age of consent was successfully raised only in a very few cases. Mr Massey said .he was convinced that some amendment to the law was necessary. He was not thinking that the age of consent should be raised above sixteen years, but of the defence that might be set up,. He had been impressed by the fact that the class of crime referred to was increasing. He would confer witlp the Minister for Justice on the subject.
