the Rovers straining every nerve to v retrieve the position, but being held by Huias. From the centre of the field, James Holmes l managed to break away, and came right down the field. Ben iCarr endeavoured to save the situation, but made the fatal error of trying to force instead of kicking out of bounds. Holmes following up speedily just managed to get the ball and score alongside the posts. Surgenor easily converted— Rovers 5, Huias 3. "Time" was sounded soon afterwards. The game was characterised by better passing than previously; indeed, the football was better all round. Mr Cavanagh, of Hairini, proved an efficient referee.

TOKIANUI-PIRONGIA JUNIORS. Pirongia kicked off, and, from a scrum in centre the black and whites got a good rush going. Tokanui were very safe, and fielded well. From a free kick Mabbett for Pirongia just missed a goal. The blues were prominent in a rush, from which Mabfcet saved by a mark. The blues again were after a score, but only got a free kick; the ball going short. After the change over the black and whites by good rushes invaded blues' 25, and Johnson, after a fine run, was pulled down on the corner. This put blues on their mettle, and the black and whites were in trouble, eventually forcing. Play now went to blues' 25, where Woolstdn, snapping the ball up quickly, got over the line. The kick at goal failed. Half-time now sounded with the score 3 to nil. After the spell the blues made the pace, and a score seemed certain. However, Beet (the black and white full-back) was safe. The blues took the mark in front of the goal, out it was a poor kick. Almost at once they were awarded a free kick in the s same place, but no goal resulted. Again, rn a minute, another mark was secured, but without result, the long grass hampering the kicker. Blues then worked right on to the line where Pirongia forced. Some good give and take play in the centre followed, with Pirongia getting the advntage. However, by offside play by Pirongia, the Blues gained ground, and just on the call of time in a loose rush got over, the kick being a good one. The whistle blew with scores: Tokanui 5, Pirongia 3. This was a good game to watch, the ball going from*one end of the field to the other in quick time, and only lack of -combination stopped each team from scoring. Mr W. G. Sim was an efficient referee.

MORE ROUGH PLAY. Whilst there was a gratifying diminution of rough play about the RoverHuia match, the same cannot be said regarding the Tokanu'i-Pirongia contest, which was disfigured by a great deal of unneccessary rough play. If firm steps are not taken by the referees .io" put down this undesirable condition, which has been the characteristic noiiit of most matches ihis season, the Rueby game will soon lose its oopularity in Tp Awamutu, as supporters will nor. 'tolerate such displays. It is to he hoped that nlnvers will heed the warnings erive>n before the Union : s roraneHed to take drastic action to exterminate this- conker.
