WANGANUI HARBOUR.

IMPROVEMENT AT SMALL COST. Natural methods have been adopted with good results by the Wan.gan.ui ■Harbour Board. A comparatively small sum was spent on harbour work during the year, yet by gentle guiding the natural current of the tides and stopping 'the sand drift a marked improvement has been wrought in the harbour. It- was reported at the 'annual meeting of the- Board that the entrance now .showed 'the greiaitedt depth of water yet recorded —24 feet 3 inches at high-water spring tides, and ■2l feet 3 inches high water at neap tides. The depth has been increasing month, by month since the new methods were adopted, and Mr A. <G. Bignell, who was re-elected chairman, expressed the confident belief that liners would be berthed at Castlecliff in the near future. The depth of water in the river channel to the town wharf also has been much improved.' the shallowest portion now being 14 feet.
