The monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Town Board, held on Tuesday evening, was attended by Messrs F. 0. R. Phillips (chairman), H.. Benner, H. Corbett, and R. Bell. An Explanation. A letter was received from Mrs R. Osmond demanding an apology inasmuch that she, though a sister of one of the fallen soldiers whose name was on the memorial, had been refused admittance by. Mr Benner to the afternoon tea to which the relatives of the fallen had been invited on the occasion of the unveiling of the war mememorial.
After discussion and explanation by Mr Benner the clerk was instructed to write to Mrs Osmond to the effect that Cr Benner regretted that he was temporarily unaware that Mrs Osmond was a relative of one of the fallen. Had he known he would have been only too pleased to have offered her the Board's hospitality. Mr Benner apologised for the oversight and apparent slight put upon Mrs Osmond. Notice of Motion.
The chairman gave notice of-motion that the Board levy a general rate of 2£d in the £ on the unimproved value of all ratable property, and, further, that the Board levy the following special rates on the unimproved value of all ratable property in the rating area: £2OOO loan, Id in the £; £2250 loan, lid in the £; £IOOO, hall loan, Id in the £; £2400 loan, Id in the £. General. In response to a letter from Mr L. Nicholson, asking for remuneration for his services as operator during Mr Smith's absence, the Board resolved to pay him the sum of £5. A building permit was granted to Messrs Closey Bros, for a concrete building in Maniapoto Street. Applications for permits from Messrs Bevington and W. H. V. Hall were held over pending receipt of specifications. The sum of £6 16s was voted to the chairman for travelling expenses in connection with his visit to Welling-: ton in regard to the Marakopa hydroelectric power scheme. Accounts to the amount of £163 Is 2d were passed for payment. The hall committee was instructed to make inquiries in connection with a heating system for the hall during the winter, and also a cooling system for the summer months. The clerk was instructed to deal with the provision of dog collars. It was resolved that the Waitomo Sawmills Company be written to regarding the damage done by the company's carting on Te Kawa Street. The poundkeeper is to be Instructed to detain cattle and horses found on the streets after dark, and to report each case to the Board.
