COUNTY OF OTOROHANGA.

FIRST COUNCIL ELECTED.

ELECTION'S IN THREE RIDINGS.

The elections rendered necessary in the Wharepapa riding (two councillors) and Honikiwi and Waipa ridings (one councillor each) of the new Otorohanga county were held on Thursday and created a considerable degree of interest, the polling being heavy. The election arrangements were conducted by Mr .S. J. Fortescue, who, in his capacity as returning officer proved the right man in the right place, there being no hitch whatever, and the returns being quickly ann°Appended are the results of the polling:— Wharepapa Riding.

Number on roll, 204, of whom some are entitled to exercise up to three votes. Votes recorded, 200. The first meeting of the newly-con-stituted Council will be held on Monday morning next. INTEREST AT OTOROHANGA. Our Otorohanga correspondent writes as follows: —The polling for four councillors to represent the Honikiwi, Waipa and Wharepapa ridings evoked great interest, and there was a larger poll taken than usual. Still there were many in the Honikiwi and Waipa ridings who did not exercise their privilege of voting, and this emphasises the fact that there are those who are not worthy of the franchise, and they should be debarred from voting in future. The fact that votes for any of the three ridings could be recorded at the Otorohanga main booth, made things much easier, and no doubt enhanced the poll. The deputy returning officers were Messrs Aves (Otorohanga), B. Bailey (Otewa), C. Tucker (Honikiwi), and H. Osmond (Whawharu-). The new council will consist of Messrs F. Potts (Te Rau-a-Moa) unopposed; Lurman’ and Cooper (Mangaoronga) unopposed, and W. Irvine (Waipa), B. Budden (Honikiwi), and Teasdale and Young (Wharepapa).

Tucker, presented his balance sheet in connection with the recent meeting, the receipts being £132 3s 7d, and disbursements £127 2s lOd leaving a balance /to the good of £5 Os 9d. This balance, however, will be wiped out when certain outstanding liabilities are paid. Thus the club will still have in hand £4O 11s 3d, which was brought over from last year. Analysing the receipts it is found that though the gate money was some £lO or £l2 more than last year, there were losses on the horse events (£ls), and the sale of programmes (£3 14s lOd). The balance sheet was adopted, subject to audit The secretary intimated his intention of donating the amount of his honorarium to the funds of the club. This was much appreciated, and Mr Tucker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his generosity. The protest of Joe Mate in regard to the high jump event was referred to the committee for conference with the handicappers'. Mate protested at being handicapped 3 inches (he not being a past performer), against R. Budge, who was adjudicated the winner, and who had been both a former performer and a winner. The protest of B. Carr against Meredith in the open horse jump was not upheld, and the protest fee was declared forfeited. The committee was instructed to endeavour to arrange a lease of Belcher’s paddock from year to year, so that the club could improve the running tracks, etc. The prize for the relay race was fixed at £2 (IDs for each man). Hearty votes of thanks and appreciation were accorded Messrs J. Belcher for the use of his paddock, and C. R. Taylor for his indefatigable services in preparing the grounds, etc., and the meeting adjourned.
