OHAUPO TOWN BOARD.

MEETING OF MEMBERS. business transacted. A meeting of tile Ohaupo Town Board was held last evening. There weie present: ‘Messrs E. J. Edwards (chairman), A. Turnwald, A. Karl, N. J. Finlay, W. West. F. H. Gillett. Electric Lighting’. Mr Graham presented a petition signed hy thirty residents and ratepayers urging that the Borad shoulc reconsider its decision to remove the street light opposite the Waipa Coumy Council’s office on the main road on the following grounds:—(l) The point is a dangerous one to pedestrians; (2) during wet weather the water tables become blocked, forming a backwash, frequently overflowing the paths. This is most discomforting to negotiate in the dark; (3) through the absence of livery stables' in the township, for years the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co’s, yard has become the only place where residents could bestow their horses and vehicles, when attending social functions 1 , meetings, and church services. The light has been a boon to these people, who now much appreciate it; (4) by removal of this light the hollow will be left in total darkness as the lights on the corners of the Railway and Ngahinapouri Road are not sufficiently powerful to radiate to the point of danger. Speaking in support of the petition, Mr Graham pointed out the need for the retention of the light in question, as the yard adjoining the N.'Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency was much used by people with vehicles and horses when attending social and other gatherings at Ohaupo. He urged on behalf of the petitioners that the request be acceded to.

The chairman said he always regarded the light in question as essential. and he was still of that opinion. The petitioners were representative men throughout the district, and he ./thought that their wishes should be considered. Mr Karl, who proposed at the last meeting the lights should be removed, said that after hearing what had been mentioned he was in favour of the resolution being rescinded, and gave notice that‘at the next meeting he would move to that effect. He recognised that the lamp where erected should be retained. Mr Graham was informed accordingly, and then withdrew. Building Permit. Application was made by Mr S. J. Nobes for permission to erect a lockup shop adjoining his coachbuilders’ premises on the main road. Permission was granted, subject to the fee being paid. ; Lighting of Station. Complaint was made by Mr Gillett that no light was provided at the railway station for trucking purposes when unloading stock at night. The matter of lighting was an important one, and a petition should be presented to the railway department urging that proper lighting should be rovided. The meeting agreed to this suggestion, and the clerk was directed to draft a petition, Mr Gillett being asked to circularise same. Town Hall Loan. Replying to an applicatmn to the Public Trust Office for a loan 'of £2,000 for purposes of a town hall, the District Public Trustee wrote that the application could not be entertained. —lt was decided to approach other lending institutions for a loan. Drainage.

Mr J. R. Tong, Ohaupo, wrote that the drainage of his house was blocked, causing a bad odour. The landlord, he stated, had declined to expend any money for such a purpose, and asked the Board to attend to the matter. —The Board arranged to inspect the drain in question . Clerkship. Mr Homan, the clerk, owing to his impending removal from the district, tendered his resignation, and asked to he relieved of his position at the end of the month. He stated that the accounts for the past year had been audited by the Government auditor, and had been passed as correct. Mr Homan said that during his term of office his association with the Board had been a pleasant one, and thanked them for their consideration and help. The chairman said all regretted the departure of their. clerk, who had carried out his duties so satisfactorily. There were few local bodies who did not get some “tag” put to their accounts by the auditor, and Mr Homan was to he commended for the way in which he had done his work. The resignation was accepted with regret, and he (the chairman), as also Mr Karl, wished Mr Homan every future success. The question of appointing a successor was discussed, and it was <decided to call for applications and to hold a meeting to deal with the matter on Saturday next.
