MEAT PRICES.

INACCURATE STATEMENTS FROM OPPONENTS OF POOL.

Since the meat pool scheme began to take concrete form, successive attempts to discredit it have been made by its opponents. One attempt was the publication a week or so ago of a statement that prime Canterbury lamb had been sold at 9d per pound c.i.f.e., and that this drop in prices was the first result arisfing out of the settlement of the Armour difficulty through the initiation of the meat pool." The statement added that a similar fall was reported in mutton prices. The Prime Minister cabled to the High Commissioner concerning this statement, and he has received the following reply from Sir James Allen:—

" In reply to your telegram of February 16, have made full inquiries, but am unable to obtain confirmation that c.i.f.e. sales of Canterbury lambs have been made at 9d. Firms consulted do not credit accuracy of the statement, and state that they have duriug last week made c.i.f.e. sales of lambs at prices varying from lO.id to 10:jd, and that sales ex ships North Islnad lambs have been made at 10id, and 101,'d. Mutton values slightly lower, but this mainly applies to ewes and heavy-weight sheep. Prime and second class quality light-weight sheep have been sold last week ex ship at 7d.
