INSURANCE RATES.

UNDERWRITER'S ASSOCIATION TO BE APPROACHED. At last night's meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council, the secretary of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce (Mr A. G. Warburton) submitted the following resolution for the Council to submit to the Underwriters before local organisation proceeded further: "That the Borough Council be asked to make strong representations to the Underwriters' Association to reduce insurance premiums, and to assist the Brigade." Members of his Chamber, proceeded the writer, felt that the first essential in improving the status of the brigade was that the Underwriters; should either make adequate contribution towards the cost of fire fighting, or they should allow a reduced premium rate to the public, who must face an added expenditure before the brigade is properly equipped. The Mayor thought that an endeavour should be made to obtain a visit from a member of the Underwriters' Association. The alternative would be to write to the Association.

Cr. Spinley mentioned a Fire Board, under which the Association would be forced to contribute to the brigade's upkeep, but the Mayor characterised the method as cumbrous when dealing with a small brigade. Cr. Downes said the matter was discussed at last meeting of the Chamber, and it was decided that the Borough Council waa the proper body to prefer the matter to the Association. He gave instances of previous shuffling on the part of the Underwriters. He did not anticipate as much result from* correspondence as from an interview, with an accredited authority. On the motion of Cr Clark it was decided that the resolution be forwarded as requested, with a requesit for an interview with a member of the Association.
