THUMB - LOSING EPIDEMIC.
A STRANGE OTOROHANGA COINCIDENCE. (Resident Representative). Mr J. Patie, who has been in the habit of carting timber into Otorohanga for Messrs Raven and Co., of Honikiwi. met with a nasty accident on Monday, and consequently lost the top joint of his right-hand thumb. He had reached the top of the last hill coming down with a heavy load of timber, and luckily thought of testing the brake. This he found out of order, and so he descended to put matters right. Whilst doing so the 'lever, which had become detached, fell upon his thumb and smashed it. He was given a lift into Otorohanga, and attended by the doctor, who found it necessary to amputate the thumb. It seems to be a case of “ thumbs up, ’ or rather, off. in Otorohanga this year, for no less than seven cases of men losing the top joints of their thumbs have been recorded within the past four months or so.
