" Paddy's market" was opened yesterday in Willis' buildings, and good business was transacted under the 'supervision of Mrs Dalziell., The next market day will be Friday week. . It is understood that the example of the Bowling Club in abolishing. Sunday playing will be followed by the Tennis and Hockey Clubs. There is nothing like good example in matters of.this kind. \ The annual dinner of the of Commerce took place last night, and was attended by a representative gathering of about fifty, and proved a most successful function. The menu was .well chosen, and Mr Merrin is to be congratulated on ihis successful catering. The speaking was confined to a sensible, time limit for each, and a r programme of vocal music, items
being given by Messrs Rowland," Gill.more, Rtist, Bell, and Aves, dddd to the' enjoyment of a gathering which - proved v one of the best of its kind yetheld in Otorohanga. Mrs Anderson presided at the piano, and played the ' accompaniments. A full report will appear in our next issue. i Mr F. Phillips has agreed to his nomination for the vacancy* on the Waitomo County Council caused by the resignation of Mr C. G. Murphy '(Otorohanga riding). Tihe nomination paper is'signed by ratepayers of ./ all parts of the riding. ■■' A meeting of the general committee of the war memorial' fund was held yesterday afternoon, when the secre- :: tary reported a total sum of over £500; having beerucollected. It was- decided that inquiries, should be :made as 'to '■■ ■ •whether a Government subsidy was obtainable. Itvwas also agree'd that the memorial should be similar, to. the one that had been exhibited, and that it be erected on the corner of the section selected, so that it "would be in view from the whole of Manias poto Street. The executive'.was authorised to acquire the leasehold of the section-for £6O, but if that was not possible it was decided to take steps ; through the Town Board under the Public Wiorks Act to .secure the section.■/- ' « -
