THE LYRIC FOUR.
The Lyric party were unfortunate in the selection of a date to visit Te Awamutu, as the weather on Tuesday was most wintry. The result was a much smaller attendance than might reasonably have been hoped for; yet, considering the climatic conditions, the number present was an evidence of the popularity of this talented combination.
The Lyrics last came to Te Awamutu with the Chautauquas, and are well known by all local theatre-goers. On Tuesday the first part of the evening was devoted to a picture drama, which was capably screened by the Empire Theatre management, but the film was rather long, and the evening was well advanced before the Lyrics made their appearance. Their programme went with a swing from start to finish, and the concerted and individual numbers were excellent, and the appreciation of the audience was shown by the frequent demands for encores. Perhaps the best item was the duet by Miss Jessie Bartlett and Mr A. H. Ripley, but it was hard to discriminate between the items of such uniform good quality. Mr J. Ryan was in excellent form, and delighted the audience, and Mr H. Richards was. equally popular. Mr A'. McElwain, in “ some humour,’” made an excellent selection in “ Doreen ” and “ The Purchase of an Automobile,” both of which he interpreted in a masterly manner. Miss Jessie Bartlett was quite at home with the audience, which she delighted, as did Miss E. Harvey at the piano. Altogether, it was a splendid evening’s entertainment, and one that deserved a larger audience than assembled at the Empire on Tuesday.
