ELECTRIC POWER BOARD

EIRST BODY ELECTED.

UNCONTESTED ELECTIONS IN ALL

CONSTITUENT DISTRICTS. INAUGURAL MEETING NEXT MONTH. The Te Awamutu Electric Power Board came into office yesterday. Nominations which reached the returning officer (Mr D. Bockett) did ,not exceed the number of candidates required to constitute the Board, and there will, therefore, be no election.

No nomination was received from the portion of the Wharepapa road district which is included within the power district. Mr N. M. Lethbridge had accepted nomination, but owing to unavoidable circumstances the papers signifying Ms consent and bearing the endorsement of his nominators did not reach the returning officer in time for the declaration. The consent is now lodged and representations will, we understand, be made to the Governor-General to declare Mr Lethbridge elected in terms of the Statute, which vests authority to do so in such circumstances. It is .to be hoped that this will be done, so that Wharepapa may have representation at the inaugural meeting of the Board. , Five members of the Board have held office on the provisional committee which has brought about the creation of the power district, and their past knowledge will be a valuable .help in determining the immediate policy of the new Board. Each one of the constituent districts has secured able representation, and, collectively, the new Board is such as promises the capable solution of difficulties and problems which must arise during the inaugural term of office.

In order to avoid the costs of election the districts have very wisely carried on an active propaganda during the last fortnight and finally made a selection without recourse to the ballot. The result has been an able and the return of the selected candidates to the important office of public control without delay or .uncertainty. . The first meeting of the Power Board is to take place at the Borough ,Council chambers, Te Awamutu, on ,11th February next. The Board is elected for a term of three years. Personnel of the Board.
