SOLDIERS’ FAREWELLS.

A very successful social evening was spent on Tuesday evening, when a lew friends gathered together to bid farewell to Mr Oswald Thompson, on the eve of his departure for camp. The guest lias three other brothers now on active service, Mr D. Thompson having just preceded him by a month. Mr Thompson came to To Awannitu about one year ago, and since then lias made many friends, and is very popular among all who know him. During the evening his friends presented him with a gold wristlet watch and a handsome collapsible drinking mug, the presentation being made by Mr Douglas, who referred to his sporting qualities and popularity. Songs were sung by Messrs Douglas, (enclmre, “Coming Home From tlie Wake”), McDonald and Bills and recitations by Messrs Haines and Douglas. After drinking to the health of the guest, the party dispersed in the small hours of the morning.

SOCIAL AT OIIALTO. Another very successful “soldiers’ farewell social” was held in the Ohaupo Hall on Thursday last, the occasion being to bid farewell to I’rivatos Pickett, Garmonswuy, and Corrigan, who are leaving with the next reinforcements for the front. During the evening a presentation, consisting of a soldiers’ companion, from the Ohaupo residents, and a parcel of soldiers' comforts from the Ohaupo Ladies fled Cross Society was made tc each soldier. The presentation was made by the chairman (Air A. MM can) and was rcspomleu to by Private Corrigan on behalf of the departing soldiers.. An oxee.um: -upper was provided by the la lies. .Excellent music was supplied by Misses Graham ami Piesley (piano.' and Mr Hartley (violin). Air Kemp was M.C. PHIOMUA PRESENTATION, Owing to tiie death of his brother (killed in action) tlm farewell social which was being tendered to Air P. McCarthy lias been abandoned. His friends nol wanting him to leave tor camp without some remembrance, proceeded to the hotel on Wednesday evening and Air Chappell, on behalf of Mr McCarthy’s many friends, presented him with a ease of pipes, and a ease of razors. The recipient suitably responded.
