As advertised in another column notice is given of a smoke concert to he held at Jackson’s sample rooms to-night in connection with the local Polo Club: Mr Young, M.P., asked the Minister of Railways in the House last week whether he will give instructions to have the railway crossing in Lake Road equipped with the new automatic crossing alarm which has been approved by the Railway Department. The Minister replied to the effect that the crossing in question is on the list of crossings to be equipped with the neun automatic crossing alarm in it/ turn with the other busy crossings. / The Invercargill correspondent of the Lyttelton Times states that there is a strong demand in the north of Southland for/neep and young ( cattle. A large number of cattle have been railed to Canterbury and /other places. The price of sheep, however, is so high that ljftle, it any, business has beej/done, local values being in ex/ess of what northern buyers prepared to pay. of late have not realised prices that encourage hireling to any extent to meet •Rfcal demands. The position is largely due to many farmers giving up grain producing owing to the unremunerative returns. However, for several weeks past inquiry has been made not only in the South Island, but also as far as Auckland, for good draughts. Quite a number have left the Southland district at full market values. There is an evident scarcity of animals of this class in the north, as freight and other expenses have to be added to the initial outlay.
