NGAROMA.

(Own Correspondent.)

Only fourteen members were present at the monthly meeting of the Ngaroma Settlers’Association last Saturday. The day was bitterly cold with frequent showers qf rain and hail, and when you consider that themeetr jng was held in the open air, it is not surprising that very little interest was taken in some of the subjects brought forward for discussion. The principal subjects brought forward were the- question of obtaining an improved mail service, and also a suitable building for a school. It is nearly eighteen months since some of the children came into this settlement, and there is not a school started yet. It seems hardly fair that we back-blockers should be compelled to wait so 'long for a school, and the town people get all the conveniences—technical schools and lecture rooms. I don’t know why the Departments should be so slow in helping the out-back settlers, and why should we have to pay towards getting our mail carried

in ? We have enough to put up wiih, wh.it with bad loads and heavy carting and packing fees. We have had a great deal of wet weather this month, and some heavy lrosts. It has had the effectof delaying the road makers and bush fellers. Two of the settlers and a bushman went out on the sick list last week. Theie are ten men in one bush camp felling over two hundred acres, and for the adjoining settler .about one hundred and fifty. A fair amount of bush has been felled on this block this winter, and given a dry season there should be some big fires next January and February. Some of the settlers are busy pit-sawing, and soon a few more permanentbush homes will be built. After a year or two of tent life anything in the shape of wood er iron is welcome, especially m the wet season.
