BAND CONTEST AND CARNIVAL.

A meeting of the committee of the Te Awamutu Town Band was held at the office of the WAIPA POST last night, Mr A. G. Warburton, vice-president, in the absence of the president (Mr J. Jackson), presiding. After routine business had been transacted the discussion turned to the arrangements in connection with the forthcoming contest and carnival.

The secretary reported that the necessary permit had been issued for the holding of an art union. The prizes (19 in number) had been fixed at £IOO, and it had been necessary for him to obtain the mineral specimens, and obtain a certificate to the effect of their value and that they were actually in his possession. Several resolutions affecting the band contest conditions were approved, and the issue of circular letters to the competing bands (seven) was authorised. The secretary reported that Mr F...D. Wood had consented to draw up the programme for the children's Literary. Section. Mr. Wood had also approached Dr. Mcllraith with the request that he judge this section, that gentleman having kindly consented to act in that capacity. A draft programme of events including, in addition to the Band Quick Step and Test Selection Contest for the shield presented by the Dresden Piano Company, Instrumental Solos and Quartettes, Fancy Dress Push Ball and Hockey Matches were drawn up. It is also proposed to arrange a children's programme of musical and literary events. Detail arrangements were considered, and the meeting adjourned for one week to enable preliminaries to be completed. It was resolved that the secretary ascertain the conditions of a special train service over the Taumarunui, Huntly, Rotorua and Te Aroha sections of railway for that day. It was also decided that at the next meeting of the committee a programme be drafted, which would be submitted to the band, and then later to a public meeting for endorsement. The secretary was instructed to approach the Te Awamutu

Retail Traders Association with a view to securing the co-opera-tion and assistance of the members of that association in making the carnival a success.

Other detail business was transacted, and the meeting ad-/ journed for one week.
