The Waipa Post. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY AND FRIDAY FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1914. LOCAL AND GENERAL

A report of yesterday’s Police Court proceedings will be found on page 6 of this issue. The Te Kuiti hockey team journeyed to .Ohaupo yesterday, where they defeated thb Ohaupo representatives by 3 goals to 2. The following is the hockey team selected by Mr. C. Davis to compete in the White Horse Cup competition which takes place at Auckland: —Parker, Johns, Douglas, North (2), Duncan, Andrews, Solomon, Gordon, R. Johnstone, Finn, H. Forkert, Peat, Allright, Jephson, Yorston. The annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce which takes place on Tuesday evening next, is being looked forward to with interest. As one of the purposes of the meeting is the election of officers, some speculation exists as to the personnal of next year’s officials. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a branch of the Waikato Liberal and Progressive Association at Pirongia is advertised to take place at the Pirongia library at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday). Delegates will be present from Hamilton, and all interested are invited to attend.

At the completion for the world’s type-writing championship, held at Toronto recently, Miss Owen, of New York, the holder of the title, maintained her supremacy, writing 125 words a minute for half an hour. Miss Rose Fritz, of New York, was second with 122.3 words, and Miss Bessie Friedman, also of New York, was third with 122 words.

On Wednesday next at Bockett’s paddock the Waipa hockey reps, will meet the Cambridge team. A great deal of interest is being taken in the game, as this will be the final game before the team takes its departure for Auckland. The Cambridge team is a particularly strong one, and the game should be an interesting one. A . small charge will be made at the gate.

The four tenders received for the new Methodist Church, Te Awamutu, varied from £I6OO to £2IOO, and being too high the trustees have instructed their architect, Mr de Ridder, to secure tenders for labour only (all material will be provided). The horse and buggy shelter, also improvements to the present church, and the laving out of the section will be postponed, and only the new church itself gone on with. The progress of the streets and footpaths formation works at Te Awamutu, and the advent of the water supply, has brought about the removal of still another historic land mark —the town pump —which has for many years occupied a rather prominent position in the main thoroughfare near the public library. On Wednesday last the pump was dismantled. It had certainly served a valuable purpose in the past, and many a resident will remember with gratitude the relief it brought during the summer droughts, with the resultant empty tanks. At the same time it is pleasing to consider that the removal of “an old friend” is the outcome of the installation of more modern equipment, which is in keeping with the advance of the times.

As will be seen by the programme circulated with this issue, the entertainments arranged by the Methodist Church committee are of a varied and interesting character. Mr Suckling’s ability as an elocutionist is highly praised in Auckland, where he has given a number of recitals. The services of the local singers who are assisting are always appreciated, and in addition to those whose names appear on the programme, Miss Price (ot Auckland) has consented to sing at Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and Kio Kio. This young lady is the possessor of a rich and thoroughly-trained contralto voice, and, as she has come to reside in Te Awamutu, will prove herself to be a welcome addition to the gifted company of local songsters.
