HOCKEY.

ROVERS V. WARATAHS

There was a large attendance at Bockett's paddock on Wednesday aiternoon, when Rovers (red and white) and Waratahs (blue and white) met. As was anticipated, the game was an interesting one throughout, being a hard and fast contest. Visitors were present from Paterangi and Pirongia. The teams were the same as published in our last, issue, with the exception that Rochfort replaced Shepherd (goal) in the Rovers team. The result was the defeat of. the Waratahs by 2 goals to 1. Rovers attacked strongly in the opening stages. Free hits were awarded both teams. From a | good hit by Edwards the ball j was taken to Rovers' circle, the j hitting proving too hard, the ball j going behind. From the bully-off Knight took plav to half way, j where the ball was hit out. Johns ! secured from the throw-in, sent a j pass on to Davis. Duncan, however, interrupted, and play hovered about mid-field for some time, neither side gaining much advantage. For obstruction the reds were awarded a free hit. Shortly after Knight had a shot in front of blues' goal, the ball going outside the net. The reds continued to attack, and Reekie was having a busy time, having at last to concede a corner to save. The blues then took a hand at attacking, Johns hitting out at half way. -A rush by the blues' forwards saw a splendid chance spoiled by C. Davis being off-side. Bad stopping and speculating was noticeable among the blues. The reds, headed by Solomon, took play to their opponents' 2S, Knight received a pass from L. North, the ball missing the net by a couple of feet. Johns repulsed a strong attack, and Taylor missing, the ball was hit behind the reds' line. For some time afterwards play was very fast and even, each side having a turn of attacking. McGivern, by good line play, took play to reds' territory, but was not supported and a good chance was lost. Stewart and L. North shifted play, but the defence of Edwards and Vile proved too hard to pierce. Half time was called with Waratahs attacking. On resuming Rovers attacked, the ball going over the blues' line. Later Taylor received a good pass in reds'2s, but nothing came of it, the ball being taken out. The blues retaliated with a fine passing rush and a corner was conceded, which resulted in some scrambling play in the reds' circle, from which a goal resulted. From bully-off, C. Davis with a fine passing rush, took play to reds' territory, Douglas saving well. 'Sticks'gave blues a chance, but hard hitting spoiled it. Play now became very willing, the reds making great efforts to score. At last their chance came. Playing determinedly, they pressed hotly and L. North getting a pass from Robertson in blues' circle, sent the ball into the net amid great excitement, thus equalising the score. From the bully-off, McGiven opened up an attack, and a free hit was given against reds. Play travelled up and down the field eventually going out at half way. Reds then attacked hotly, and Reekie was called upon to defend his goal. From a free hit the ball was passed out to L. North, who found the net with a good shot. Both teams then attacked in turn, the whistle sounding shortly after with the scores — Rovers 2, Waratahs I. Mr Tver refereed, giving the utmost satisfaction.

For the winners, L. North, Douglas, Solomon, Stewart, and Jack were prominent, while for the losers, Johns, C. Davis. Edwards, and Parker were the best. C. Davis was practically neglected, the forwards bunching too much, frequently getting in one another's road.

LADIES V. BOYS. This match took place in Bockett's paddock on Wednesday afternoon. The weather was dull and threatening. The result was an easy win for the boys, who quite outclassed their fair opponents. Mr W. Bonnar acted as referee.
