BOWLS.

DILLON SHIELD COMPETITION •STARTS TO-MORROW. (By “Right Bias”). To-morrow afternoon the first round of this season’s Dillon Shield competition will be played between the Waipawa and Waipukurau clubs. Each club will put eight rinks into the field, four at home and four away, which should give younger players an opportunity of gaining experience. The trophy is at present held by the Waipawa Club. It was suggested last year that an alteration be made in the to provide that points he counted for rink wins, the aggregate score only to count in the event of a tie in

games. Under the present conditions it is possible for a club with only one win to come out on top in a round. This rink may put up a cricket score whilst their club mates go down by small margins. I have not yet heard whether the matter has been considered by the Dillon Shield Committee, if that body is still functioning.

When this handsome trophy was donated by Messrs Hector and Percy Dillon the hope was expressed that eventually it would lead to a move extended competition, if clubs were formed at Takapaii and Otane. It is to be hoped that next season an effort will he made to give effect to the donors’ wishes by including Otane. Conditions could easily be arranged to suit a club with a small membership.

Mentioning Otano reminds me that the members of this little club are showing keen interest in the game. I would suggest that at the first opportunity a few players from the Waipawa Club might arrange a courtesy visit.

Amongst the younger players of the local club Ron. Petherick is undoubtedly showing the greatest promise. He is so fair unbeaten in his section of the Champion Singles, and on his present play will give a few of the ex - champions and near - champions moire than a good game.

Hawke’s Bay players in the singles and pairs competitions at the Dominion tournament did not meet with a very great measure of success. Jack Johnston, of the Port Club, reached the post-section play in tile singles, but was eliminated in his first game in the draw. Likewise Bennett and Duff, of the Hastings Club, went out in the first game of post-section play in the pairs.

A full entry is expected for the open pairs tournament of the local club next Wednesday and Thursday. Eng'ebi’ctsen, ex-singles champion of New Zealand, will be a competitor, being coupled with Jcnkinson, of the Heretaunga Club. Richards and Haldane, of Waipukurau, always a hard pair to heat, will also probably be on the mat. Harry Steele and Wardell-Johnson will represent the Bluff Hill Club.

Local teams formed are:' —Ireland and Eagle, Ron. Petherick and -Topsoil, Limbrick and Patterson. The local entry is limited to four pail's. TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW. Owing to a number of the players selected for the first Dillon Shield match of the season to-morrow not being available a number of alterations have been necessitated. The teams now stand as under: — Away. Larsen, Carter, August, Eagle. Hawke, Little, Mclntosh, Critchley. Ron. Petherick, Angus, Walker, McKay. Murray, Hodge, Payne, Fleet. At Home. Davy, Harwood, Clark, Patterson. ’ King, McDonell, Dunkin, Wallace. Limbrick, Nissen, Ireland, Dailey. Barrie, Waldvom, Kenny, Petherick.
