BATHING TRAGEDY
ELDERLY SETTLER DROWNED. GISBORNE, Last night. A bathing tragedy occurred at Wainui beach on Sunday afternoon, the victim being David John Cumming, aged 62, farmer, married. The body was recovered by the Wainui surf life-saving patrol. The victim was bathing with his sons, and they had difficulty in keeping their feet in the heavy surf which was running. The father was being swept out into deeper water, and one son, W. Cumming, struggled ashore in a semi-exhausted condition. The other son remained supporting his father, who apparently suffered a fatal heart attack by shock, being carried out. The victim was bom in Tasmania and came to New Zealand 40 years ago.
