Miss H. Hind, who was recently appointed to the staff of the Waipawa District High School, entered on her duties this morning. An old resident of Elsthorpe, in the person of Mrs Duncan, relict of the late John Duncan, passed away at her residence in Hastings on Saturday, qt the ripe age of 86 years. The funeral is to take place at Otane to-morrow afternoon, preceded by service at the Presbyterian Church. Nurse Sharpies, formerly of Waipawa, who has been doing duty in the Spanish war zone for the past twelve months, is returning to New Zealand to organise a campaign for funds to equip a motor operating theatre and ambulance for Spain. For twelve months Sister Sharpies has been in the thick of the warfare. She said she saw hundreds of men, women and children mown down by machine-guns, but perhaps the worst feature of the civil war was the damage, devastation and loss of life from aerial bombing. Mr E. P. Smyrk, a well-known Napier identity, passed away on Saturday at the residence of his daughter at Greenmeadows, at the age of 81 years. He was for many years in the employ of the “Daily Telegraph,” and was foreman of the jobbing department of that paper when it celebrated its 25th anniversary, 43 years ago. In his early days he took an active interest in Rugby, and was secretary of the H.B. Rugby Union for some years. He was also closely identified with cricket, and latterly with bowls, as a member of the Wairere and Omarunui clubs. He leaves a family of four daughters and two sons (including Mr P. R. Smyrk, of Waipukurau). In addition there are 28 grand-children and nine great-grand-children.
