BOROUGH AFFAIRS

FIRST MEETING OF NEW COUNCIL. Present—The Mayor (Mr F. Eagle), and Crs. T. H. Limbrick, J. R. Barker, G. Knoblocli, AY. M. Murray, G. H. Harvey, and J. Holdsworth, A tender of £27 10s was received from P. Brown, Wellington, for cleaning and repairing th band instruments. —The Mayor stated that the Finance Committee had been empowered to act, and in view of the reasonableness of the quotation authority had been given to proceed with the work. Briasco’s, Napier, quoted £7 10s for dry-cleaning and renovating the band uniforms. They stated that four pairs of trousers were badly motheaten and past repair.—On the motion of Cr. Limbrick the tender was accepted. The School Commitee asked that the footpath in Harker street be kerbed and channeled.—The Mayor stated that the work had already been authorised, but it had been held over pending the completion of other works. It would be put in hand as •oon as possible. Accounts totalling £GS2 14s lOd were passed for payment, chargeable to the following accounts: —General, £545 Is 4d; gas, £lO7 13s 6d. The general account payments included £ll6 7s lOd to the Power Board and £123 7s Id to the Postal Department. COMMITTEES. Committees were appointed as under : Finance. —The Mayor, Crs. Limbrick and Barker. Fire Brigade.—The Mayor, Crs. Knobloch and Harvey. Gas— The Mayor, Crs. Limbrick and Harvey. Works—The Mayor, Crs. Barker and Holdsworth. Theatre—The Mayor, Crs. Limbrick and Murray. Reserves. —The Mayor, Crs. Murray and Knobloch. Band.—The Mayor, Crs. Murray and Holdsworth. GENERAL. In reference to the gasworks and the need for repairs to the gasholder Hie Mayor stated that the difficulty had been to make arrangements for the continuous supply of gas whilst the repairs were being made. He had been in communication with the Napier Gas Company, who had agreed to their new manager making a report. The necessary information had been supplied and the manager would pay a visit shortly, after which he would furnish a report. The town clerk reported on the visit of the Hon. J. A. Lee, in reference to the housing question. The Mayor said he considered it would not be fair to ask the new Council to deal with the estimates at their first meeting, and he proposed to defer consideration until next month. The matter of the delivery of coke by the Borough or by private tender was referred to the Gas Committee. Before closing the meeting the Mayor expressed his intention of following the ordinary rules of debate. He did not wish to suppress discussion and on important matter he would allow a fair amount of latitude, but generally speaking lie would ask councillors to keep within the rules.
