Sir Andrew and Lady Russell returned to Hastings yesterday from their visit to Australia.

At the meeting of the Napier Harbor Board on Monday Mr T. M. Geddis was re-elected chairman. Mr E. L. Cullen, Labor member for Hawke’s Bay, has received the party’s endorsement of his candidature for the seat at the forthcoming general election.

Mr T. K. S. Sidey, son of the late Sir Thomas Sidey, has been selected as the National Party candidate for Dunedin West. This is subject to approval by the Dominion council. At the annual meeting of shareholders of Williams and Kettle, Ltdin Napier opportunity w'as taken to extend to the general manager, Mr L. C. Rolls, best wishes in connection with his trip to England. Mr W. E. Barnard, M.P. for Napier, who is looking after the interests of the member for Waipawa during Mr Christie’s absence in England, will pay a visit to Waipawa and Waipukurau to-morrow. At the conclusion of the service at St. Peter’s Church on Sunday evening the Rev. W. S. C. Stephens, on behalf of members of the congregation, presented Mr Herbert l’ratley w'ith a handsomely bound hymn book and Book of Common Prayer, to mark his birthday and also in appreciation of his services as verger over a long period. Mr I. W. N. Mackie, the retiring Mayor of Waipukurau, was the guest at a complimentary luncheon tendered to him by the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce, at which various speakers testified to the able manner in which he had carried out his duties during his term of office. A presentation was made to Mr Mackie of a desk, writing set and a document portfolio. A combination walking stick and sports rest was also presented to Mrs Mackie.

The funeral of the late Mr J. C Bryant, which took place at Park< Island yesterday, was one of tin largest seen in Napier for years, ther< being over 70 cars in the cortege, tri butc to the high esteem in which tin deceased was held. There was an ex ceptionally large attendance at tin service at the church, and hundred: of citizens lined the streets alon; which the funeral procession passed The pall-bearers were Messrs W Harvey, S. P. Spiller, W. .1. Rownev E. Sutton, P. F. Higgins, and G. Milford Taylor.
