\yHEN effect is given to the wishes of the majorities as expressed at the half-holiday polls at Hastings and Waipukurau last Wednesday Waipawa will be the only Borough in Hawke’s Bay observing the statutory weekly half-holiday on a day other than Saturday, and the position arising therefrom is somewhat involved. When the matter was under discussion by the local Chamber of Commerce last year the feeling was definitely in favor of a change from Wednesday to Thursday, the latter being the day observed by Hastings, but this was contingent on Waipukurau falling into line. The position in the sister town was, however, somewhat different. The holiday there having been decided by poll of the electors no alteration could be made except by another poll, and this last week endorsed a change to Saturday. The Waipawa Borough, at a special meeting of the Council in February, acting on a recommendation from the Chamber of Commerce, decided to adhere to Wednesday.

The position in respect to Waipawa now is that that decision cannot be altered for twelve months,- except on a unanimous requisition from the business people, and, from what we can gather, there is no possibility of any such requisition being unanimous. Hence, unless in the meantime the Government move in the direction of passing legislation providing for a universal Saturday half-holiday, Waipawa will continue to observe the holiday on Wednesday for the next twelve months at least.
