THE GOVERNMENT POLICY

REVIEW BY THE PRIME MINISTER PLANS TO COMBAT DEPRESSION. FEATHERSTON, February 26. A review of the Government’s record since taking office and an outline of some of the legislation proposed before this Parliament has run its course was given by the Prime Minister, Rt, Hon. M. J. Savage, in his address at the picnic arranged by the AA’airarapa branch of the New Zealand Labor Party at the Tauerenikau racecourse this afternoon. Air Savage devoted a good deal of attention to the actions of the past Government in the depression and reiterated Labor’s claim that it was possible to insulate the New Zealand economy from the effects of any world depression. “One of the bogeys which our opponents delight to conjure up is the prospect of another depression,” Air Savage said. “They threaten the people with depression both from outside as a result of the so-called overseas recession as well as from inside as the result of Labor’s prosperity policy. Let there be no mistake or misunderstanding about it. Even if there is any recession overseas Labor’s policy is being framed to avert the effects from being imposed on the people of this country.” “Everyone knows that it is too late to discuss remedies when a crisis is upon us and preparations must be laid in times of prosperity,” the Prime Alinister said. “AYe have our plans ready—they are both comprehensive and detailed. It is largely a money problem. The Government is determined to base our money system on production.”
