Katranski, collided with the concrete bridge on the Otane main highway when motoring from Wellington to Hastings on Wednesday. Approaching the bridge he swerved to avoid a lorry coming from Otane and caught the wing of the bridge. The car was badly smashed, and Mr Katranski received injuries which necessitated his removal to Royston Hospital, Hastings. Harding, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Zoological Society, and a director of several hardware firms in England, in an interview at Christchurch. He said that ho considered Britain was in a stronger position than she had ever been before. “I can’t see any sign of depression,” he added. “It must be admitted that this is a difficult time, but Britain is financially sound, and she has a strong Government, which has tackled the position without dallying,” Mr Harding did not think that the 111-hour week would be introduced in Britain for some time. He considered that the next step would be a 45-hour week. He thought, however, that the 40-hour week, where it had been introduced, had come to stay, and that in New Zealand it was unlikely to be changed by a new Government.

Port Nicholson Silver won the A grade first test at the Bands Contest at Palmerston North, with, Wanganui Garrison second and Timaru Municipal third. Ashburton won the B grade test with an aggregate of 239 points. Hastings was eighth with 179 points. The grand test of the A grade will he played to-night. Mr E. A. Shattky, F. 1.0., F.S.M.C.
