The Railway Department ran a special train from Napier for the Wairoa races on Saturday, and it carried some 500 passengers. Notice is given by the Waipawa Ceunty Council that the WaipawaOnga Onga road will be closed to traffic for about four days, during sealing operations. Feeling fagged? There was a very poor attendance at tfe last meeting of the Onga Onga Women’s Institute, and a special meeting is to be held on March 3rd to discuss the advisability of the institute going into recess.

Indications are that the barley yield in Canterbury will be the heaviest for some years past. Harvesting operations are, well forward, and it only requires a continuance of fine weather conditions to ensure that the completion of the harvest will be effected earlier than for some seasons.

When asked if he had anything to say why sentence of death should not be passed prisoner said he did not think the Judge’s summing up was fair, and he did not think the verdict was a sane one. “So far as the death sentence is concerned,” he said, “1 am not afraid of that in any wav.”
