The adult male hippopotamus at the Auckland zoo died as the result of swallowing a tennis ball which is supposed to have been thrown to it by a visitor. The fees collected by the Waipawa Hospital Board during the half-year ended September 30th, 1937, easily constitute a record. The splendid price of 330 guineas was received for a yearling bull, Sussex of Gwavas, offered on account of the estate of Carlyon, Gwavas. A second yearling bull, on account of the same vendors, brought 300 guineas.
