The report of the president stated, inter.alia: —The raising of funds for the installing of festoons of colored lights for our main streets was undertaken by your committee, and the appeal met with a very generous response from the business people, the whole cost of the scheme being raised by voluntary contribution. This feature has had the effect of brightening the town considerably on late shopping nights, and on numerous special occasions. Your committee has associated itself with numerous matters of public interest, and has lent its influence in the requests made to the Government from time to time by local bodies. Members of the committee were included in the deputation which waited on the Minister of Education regarding the new school site, and it is pleasing to know that on that occasion this old and vexed question was finalised, the new site having been approved, and a new school in the near future is now assured. Your committee also took part in the discussion regarding the establishment of a Junior High School in Central Hawke’s Bay, and strongly pressed the claims of AVaipawa as being the most central place for its erection. The chamber took the initiative in calling a meeting of representatives of all school committees in the Waipawa rural area, at which it was resolved to further press the claims of AVaipawa from the point of view of the convenience to the prospective pupils of such a school. This matter has not yet been finalised and the efforts of the chamber will no doubt be continued towards obtaining a decision in favor of AVaipawa. During the past year the chamber also jointed in representations to the Minister of Public AA r orks regarding .the erection of a new traffic bridge adjacent to the business area, and the Minister’s sympathetic hearing of the request gives hope of this important work being put in hand within a reasonable time. AAaien the Hon. D. Sullivan, Minister of Railways and Industries and Commerce, visited AA’aipawa recently the chamber was represented at the reception given in his honor, and when matters of public interest were brought to his notice. After many years of endeavor, the chamber and the public generally will he gratified to know that plans have been prepared for the erection of a new and up-to-date post-office, and it is understood that the work on this much-needed building will be put in hand shortly.

Other matters taken up with the authorities during the period included the provision of a rail-car service for Hawke’s Bay. This service has not yet been granted, hut it is probable that it will he instituted in the near future.

Two very enthusiastic members, as well as good citizens, were ■ recently transferred from AA’aipawa, Messrs Yates and Sawyer. Both these gentlemen gave willing and untiring service to the town and their efforts were much appreciated by the community. GENERAL.
