BUSH FIRE.

DAMAGE AT ASHLEY CLINTON TWO COTTAGES DESTROYED. Two cottages, a woolshed and a number of sheep belonging to Messrs Thomsen Bros., owners of the timber mill at Ashley Clinton, were destroyed in a bush fire that raged at the foot of the Ruahine ranges in that district on Monday. The fire broke out in the morning and though a large number of settlers endeavored to stop it spreading they were only partially successful and could not save the two cottages and woolshed. Stock was hurriedly removed and in the process a number of sheep became separated from the main flock and perished in the flames. The settlers' fight, conducted throughout the day, was eventually successful towards evening and by the- following morning the first had burnt itself out. One of the dwellings and the woolshed, owned by Messrs C. and F. Thomsen, were insured in the New Zealand Office for £l5O and £2OO respectively, and the other cottage, owned by Mr J. Thomsen, was insured for £75 in the South British Office.

Why run the risk? Insure with the Norwich Union Fire Office. All classes of risks covered.—Pellow and Pellow, Agents, Waipawa.*
