MONTHLY MEETING OF THE . COUNCIL.

Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. Hunt) and Crs. R. H. Wedde, W. S. Thackeray, H. C. Collett, E. E. Bott, F. Eagle, S. J. Turner, T. Wills, and W. E. Yates. CORRESPONDENCE. R. J. Tierney advised that the Onga Onga Band Committee had decided to offer the instruments for sale, and declined to lend them to the Council.—To be notified that the ( ouncil did not propose to purchase the instruments. The Fire Brigade asked the Council to provide them with two new undress uniforms.—The Mayor stated that the Council had indented 500 ft. of hose, involving an expenditure of £-10.—Cr. Wills mentioned that 12 years ago the Brigade lent the Counci' £4o.—On the motion of Crs. Wedde and A\ ills it was decided to purchas* two uniforms on the understanding that if the Brigade made a profit or their hall they pay for one. Miss Ellis, Plunket nurse, applied for permission to build a collapsibh iron motor shed in the brick area.Deelincd, it being contrary to the by laws. Ooodger Appreciation Fund asked that subscription lists be returned.— Received. South British Insurance Co. asked for a share of the Council’s business'. -Cr. Bolt advocated a return to the balloting system.—On the motion of Crs. Bott and Thackeray it was decided to ballot for the Council’s insurances, when they fall due. amongst the companies represented by agents in Waipawa. Waipawa County Council advised that the quotation of £2 18s a day only provided for grading Bibby street, not scarifying.—Grader to be engaged. Central H.B. Power Board asked that the Council meet the Board in respect to water pumping at night.— Left to the Waterworks Committee. Department of Internal Affairs advised that the question of the date of the coming into effect of the alterations to the boundaries would be reconsidered. —Received. N.Z. Railways requested that the payment for the upkeep of the footpath on the railway bridge be made to the stationmaster.—Received. Grand Lodge of Good Templars drew attention to the growing evil of diinking in dance balls and cabarets and quoting the op : nion of Sir Thomas Wilford.—Received. Napier Harbor Board advised that the Borough’s share of the harbor rate would be £lls 4s 7d.—Received. District Highways Council advised that an examination would be held in July for foremen and overseers.— Received. Department of Health drew attention to the regulations for sanitary accommodation at theatres and publie halls.—Received. Municipal Association suggested the adoption of a uniform color for motor drivers’ licenses, to conform with the color of the plates.—Received. Napier Citizens’ Committee asked for the Council’s support in preserving Ball’s Clearing, at Puketitiri. — The Mayor said it was a worthy object. It was decided to make a grant of £2 2s. The Precision Engineering Co. quoted for street name plates.—Received. N. Speedy advised that it would be impossible to supply the dress circle seats before the 17th inst. — Received. S. W. Strang, on behalf of Mr Mustchin, asked that the water-table in Abbotsford road receive attention.—Work authorised, subject to the Council not being-involved in any ! liability. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Mr 11. Fletcher, borough overseer, reported as follows* on the work done sinee the last meeting of the Council : Fifty tons of coal has been carted to the gasworks. Metalling and grading have been done on Ruataniwha, Patangata, Abbotsford and Domain roads. Windsor Hill has been widened and metalled as directed by the Mayor. The fence at junction of Rose street and Ruatnniwha road of land given to the Council by Mr A. E. Jull has been shifted back. A matipo hedge will be planted next week. The river protection work on Mr MeGreevy’s property in Johnson street authorised by the Council has been attended to. Removing block in main sewer, cleaning paths in cemetery, cleaning around fire-plugs, repairs to broken asphalt, cleaning out road drain and putting in culvert in Great North road, with the usual routine, is the work done for the month. THEATRE CUSTODIAN. Five applications were received for the position of custodian of the theatre, including E. J. Maher, who asked permission to withdraw his resignation as bandmaster. The Mayor stated that in view of the fact that Mr Maher had withdrawn his resignation as bandmaster lie saw no reason whv he should not be appointed to the position of caretaker, and he was prepared to support his application. On the Mayor’s motion, seconded by Cr. Thackeray, Mr Maher was appointed. GENERAL. Footbridge at Lindsay end of railway bridge to be repaired. The Gasworks Committee were authorised to arrange for the resetting of the retorts. The ranger (W. Taylor) reported

having found six horses and five cows wandering on the streets. As traffic inspector he had examined two applicants for drivers’ licenses. Several eases for breaches of by-laws had been dealt with by the Court. The pay-sheet, as follows, was adopted:—General, £403 11s 4d; gas. £4O Os Id; total, £533 11s sd. Authority was given for the completion of Domain road footpath.
