WAIPAWA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. Present—Messrs L. Glenny (chairman). and Crs. J. Butler, C. Thomsen, B. Gray, and C. Bainbridge. CORRESPONDENCE. From S. W. Strang, advising collecting of hawkers’ licenses.—This was in respect to the Sheffield Supply Co. —Received. From No. 5 District Highways Council, relative to Waipawa-Onga main highway.—The engineer said the cost of the preparation of the Tikokino road could be charged to maintenance. From No. 5 District Highways Council, advising that lithos should accompany estimate of works.—The engineer said Waipawa’s applications were all in order. From Hawke’s Bay County Council, asking if Council would he prepared to agree to allocation of heavy traffic fees on the same basis as last year.—Agreed to. From Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association, drawing attention to the “lightless bicycle” menace. —Police and traffic inspector to be asked to take action.

From District Public Trustee, Napier, drawing attention to state of Smedley road.—The engineer said three miles of the road was in a bad state, and would cost £450. He recommended that application be made to the Public Works Department for a straight-out grant.—Recommendation adopted, also a request that the road be fenced.

From S. J. Fletcher, asking permission to put motor shed on road. — Agreed to. From the District Engineer of Railways, advising the terms on which road improvement could be carried out at Takapau.—Cr. Paulsen said it was absurd that the Council should he asked to expend so much money and be liable to vacate the land at three months’ notice.—lt was decided to apply for a straight-out grant of the land, or in the alternative a sale. It was also resolved to ask the District Highways Council to move in the matter. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Council’s engineer (Mr R. W. Bond) submitted his report for the period ended June 30th: — Waipawa Riding.—Metalling on the Argvll-Otane road is completed, 275 cubic yards having been used. A bad depression has developed on the main road by Mundell’s owing to swampy formation. It will be necessary to drive light piles and put down sheathing to hold the road for a length of one chain. Repairs are being done on Hickey’s road. Howard’s road: Three miles of this road is badly in need of metal. No suitable metal is obtainable along this road and it will be necessary to obtain it from the Mangaonuku river, the estimated cost being £450. Pa road: Owing to this road carrying the Wakarara timber traffic it will require metalling, 500 yards being needed. Matheson’s road: 250 yards of metal is required between Rumbal’s and the Upokororo bridge. The recent flood caused several small breaks in the willow work above the bridge over the Waipawa river on the Tiko-kino-Onga road and they should he made good. Renovating one mile of the Waipawa-Tikokino road is completed for sealing. A small bridge between Holden’s and Knapp’s has collapsed. Arrangements are in hand to replace same with a reinforced concrete culvert. Grading and general maintenance work have been carried out in this riding during the month.

Onga Riding.—Fletcher’s Crossing': The six piles to strengthen the broken section of the concrete bridge have been driven. The piles will be sheathed and the concrete work to support beams put in as quickly as possible. Sixteen piles are on the site, and are being prepared for driving in the breastwork to divert the river from encroaching on the road above the concrete bridge. Clinton Riding.—Pleasant Valley road b idge is completed. There remains to be done the cutting of a new watercourse and filling in the old river course. Slips have been removed on the top end of Church road, Makaretu. A new two-foot concrete culvert is being put in on Severinsen’s road to replace the old wooden one, which lias fallen in. Around Makaretu 300 yards of metal is required. The Mill road: Culverts and wash-outs on this road have been repaired. Bergersen’s road: One 18in, culvert, one 9in., and one 15in. culvert have been put in, and several had places made good

on this road. Repairs to road between St. Hill’s and Balfour’s have been made. Patching has been done to several other roads, water-tables and small slips attended to. Takapau Riding.—Ashcott road: Metalling on the lower end of this road is about completed. Considerable patching has been done, potholes having developed badly on many roads. Preparing the Takapau road Cor sealing has been carried out. Water-tables on the 7i-mile stretch have been opened up with the horsegrading plant. All the roads in this tiding have been attended to by the horse grader, which is now moving lo the Clinton Riding. The crushing ifiant and White trucks are engaged metalling the Takapau main road. The chip crushing plant is working satisfactorily.
