Automatic Clerks
( Machines which automatically “post” ledgers, extending a balance after each day’s deposits or withdrawals are entered, have been installed in the King-street, Manchester, branch of the Midland Bank. In future a depo itor, instead of having to rely on his pass book, will have posted to him a weekly or monthly statement giving particulars of payments and withdrawals, and the state of the account to date. The system is in use in more than 30,000 banks in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, South America and Italy.
Tiie system of posting weekly or monthly statements to customers is already. a representative of the London Daily Telegraph was informed in May last, in operation in certain of the Midland Bank’s London branches. Its introduction has been found convenient from many points of view, and there is every probability of its widespread use in the near future. Often it is • inpossible for a client, owing to frequent absences from home, to see his pass book as frequently as he w-ru’.i do in normal circumstances, and, apart from such cases, there are obvious advantages in the system for the general commercial and business man.
