PORT NAPIER FIRE.

HANDLING THE DAMAGED CARGO. DEMANDS FOR INCREASED PAY. (Per Press Association). ' AUCKLAND, This day. No work was done this morning in the discharge of the Port Napier’s cargo as a result of the watersiders’ demands for increased pay. Their first demand was pay at 7s 6d an hour for handling cargo partly damaged by fire. A suggested compromise that nil extra lOd per hour for work on the shelter deck and lOd per hour for work in the ’tween decks was not accepted. Yesterday afternoon, after one stop, work proceeded in the hold where the fire occurred, while a conference was proceeding, hut an impasse was reached. Part of the cargo from No. 4 hold had been unloaded, some of it hopelessly damaged by fire and water. Much of the cargo was intended for the Auckland Christmas trade. Outwardly a ease of cargo in sight appears damaged mostly by smoke, it. is known, however, that a great deal of damage was caused by the large amount of water (lumped into the hull.
