The M.P. and the Match

Mr D. M, Cowan, M.P., a ScottishLiberal, was tLe centre of an incident in the House >*f Commons recently which made members sit up and rub their eyes with amazement- Mr Cowan abstractedly put his hand in his pocket, produced a pipe, and put it in his mouth. A moment later # he produced matches, and a point of light which startled the House appeared as li« struck one of them.

Mr Cowan’s neighbour seized him by the arm. Startled from his far-awaj dream, he was inclined to be indignant. He turned toward the member for a moment as if to demand an explanation of such rude conduct. Then in a flash he realised where he was. He hurriedly dropped the lighted match on the floor and trampled on it. His pipo disappeared with equal rapidity.
