CHARGES OF THEFT. (Per Press Association). PALMERSTON N., This day. Charges involving the theft of over £3OO were preferred against Samuel Herman Bird, aged 28, a clerk, in the Police Court this morning. The police evidence was to the effect that accused was employed by an accountant who was secretary to various companies and it was accused’s duty to receive the cheques and pay them into the hank. But several of these he converted to his own use as well as appropriating petty cash. The thefts occurred over a period of 12 months. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence.
