SEVEN A-SIDE RUGBY.

SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT. WAIPAWA TEAM WINS SENIOR GRADE. JUNIORS RUNNERS-UP IN JUNIOR CONTEST. The weather conditions on Saturday morning last were not at all promising for outdoor sports, but towards mid-day a decided improvement took nlaee, which allowed the seven-a-side Rugby tournament, arranged by the Central Hawke’s Bay Sub-union, to he carried out to a successful issue. There was a large attendance of the ■public, who were treated to some good, fast, open football in the different grades. The games were confined to five-minute spells, and as a onsequence the competing teams ,vere “all out” in their endeavors to iecure victory.

Waipawa teams were well in the limelight in the senior and junior grades, the former notching their first win against Waipukurau Old Boys by 8 to 3. In their second effort they were drawn against Napier High School (probably tile fastest team •ompeting), who had in the first round beaten Waipukurau by 16 to nil, and he hopes of the Waipawa supporters were at a low ebb. But the local players rose to the occasion and playing with great dash broke up all the High School’s dashes and ran out winners by 0 to nil. In the final they .net Te Ante (who in the first round beat Napier Technical Old Boys by 8 to nil), and after a keen contest beat the College boys by a converted try lo nil.

The Waipawa juniors, in their first game, against Tikokino, had a lucky win by three points. In their second game, however, they showed improved form and succeeded in lowering the Hastings team's colors by 8 to 6. The latter’s attempt to equalise by converting a try being smothered by Banks. Their next opponents were Te Aute, whom they beat by 5 to nil, and in the final they went under to Pirates by 3 to nil.’ This game necessitated' a third spell, as at the call of time no score had been registered and Pirates secured a try. The third grade contest was won by Hastings High School Old Boys, who defeated Napier High School Old Boys by 3to nil. An extra spell had to lie jilnyed in this game before a score was registered. Two running events were got off during an interval. The first was for lady hockey players and the second for' footballers. Five ladies competed, and in the men’s event 16 players faced the starter, a good contest resulting, the winner taking Mr E. Limbrick’s challenge cup.

Each winning team in the three grades received a cup, in addition to which a medal was given for the individual members of the combination. At the conclusion of the games the presentation of trophies was made by Mr E. A. Goodger, chairman of the Sub-union. In doing so he thanked the visiting players for their assistance and hoped that, as it was intended to make the gathering an annual one, they would go away satisfied and next season induce others to take part. Cheers were called for the winners as the recipients were handed their trophies. A meed of praise must be given to those responsible for carrying out the arrangements of the function.
