WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waipawa Women's Institute was held last Wednesday in St. Peter’s Schoolroom. Owing to the many counter-attractions and general business of the Christmas season, the attendance was not so good as usual. After the usual routine business, and the making of arrangements for Jlie children’s party, the proceedings became social and a pleasant afternoon was spent. A parcel-tying competition caused much amusement. Competitors were provided with a dinner plate, a tennis ball, paper and string and had to make the best of it. The prize winner was Mrs Hill, who contrived a beautiful package from her materials. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Rennett, Mrs Rathbone and Mrs Strang, the hostesses for the afternoon. CHRISTMAS PARTY. A Christmas party was given by the Women’s Institute to the children of Abbotsford Home yesterday afternoon and proved a great success. Beautifully decorated tables were laid in St. Peter’s Schoolroom, and about fifty young people sat down to a sumptuous tea at five o’clock. Christmas crackers and toy balloons enlivened the proceedings at tea time, and an abundance of soft drinks and fruit made the meal a very festive one. After tea games were played in the Domain, when the young folks enjoyed the old-fashioned games of “Nuts in May,” “Oranges and Lemons,” etc., a pleasant interlude in I lie games being the arrival of a box of cherries sent by a gentleman friend. At seven o’clock the young folk reassembled in the schoolroom and refreshments were again handed round, and some litle gifts were distributed, among which was a box of chocolates for each child. Sister Elsie, in a short speech, thanked the Women’s Institute for its kind thought and the children sang a little song for their hostesses in a very pleasing manner.
