COSTLY PUBLICATION. One of the greatest wastes in Parliamentary life is the production of “Hansard,” popularly supposed.to he a faithful reproduction of members’ speeches in the House, hut really only a record of what members think they said or what they wish their constituents to believe. Each session 7000 copies of “Hansard” are published, and last year only £2OB was received from subscribers. ELECTION PROMISES. In . the House to-day Mr M. J. Savage asked the Prime Minister if the Government had authorised its candidates for the coming- elections to guarantee State Advances loans to applicants who would undertake to support Reform candidates. Mr Savage said he had received a letter from a constituent who stated that such representations were made to him hy a canvasser on behalf of a Reform candidate. “The statement or information or imputation,” replied the Prime Minister, “is without foundation in any sense at all. It must he well known to the hon. member that a Board deals with such questions and not a Minister or anyone else.” The Investment Board dealt with all applications for advances to settlers or workers. Any promise which was made on the lines suggested would he completely worthless.
